Facts about the tracks
Mittelstollen refers to a specific type of German tank track design, most commonly associated with late-war Panthers and related vehicles.
What “Mittelstollen” Means
  • German term:
    • “Mittel” = middle
    • “Stollen” = cleat or grouser
  • So it literally means “central cleat”.
It describes a track with a raised traction bar running down the center of each link.
Where It Was Used
  • Seen on late versions of the Panther tank
  • Also used on vehicles sharing Panther components like the Jagdpanther
Design Features
  • Each track link had:
    • A prominent central ridge (cleat) for grip
    • Standard guide horns to keep alignment
  • The cleat improved:
    • Traction in mud, snow, and loose ground
    • Forward grip under acceleration
Purpose & Advantages
  • Introduced to improve performance in:
    • Eastern Front mud
    • Snow and icy terrain
  • Benefits:
    • Better bite into soft ground
    • Reduced slipping compared to flatter track designs
Manufacturing Simplicity
  • Mittelstollen tracks were also:
    • Easier to produce than earlier, more complex patterns
  • Late-war German industry needed:
    • Faster production
    • Less machining time
Trade-offs
  • The central cleat:
    • Could cause more vibration on hard surfaces (roads)
    • Increased wear on paved surfaces
  • Still required rubber pads (when fitted) for road use
Overall
  • Mittelstollen tracks were:
    • A late-war improvement focused on traction and production efficiency
    • Part of Germany’s effort to keep vehicles like the Panther effective under worsening conditions
