Facts about the tracks

Same Wide Combat Tracks (with Improvements)

The Tiger I retained its 725 mm-wide combat tracks.
Still designed to lower ground pressure for a 57-ton tank.
Mid-production links were slightly strengthened to reduce wear and cracking seen earlier.

Improved Track Links & Pins

Track pins and connectors were upgraded for better durability.
Early issues with pin loosening and excessive wear were reduced.
This improved track lifespan and reliability in long operations.

Continued Use of Interleaved Wheels

The complex interleaved road wheel system remained unchanged.
Still provided:
- Smooth ride
- Even weight distribution
But it still trapped mud and ice, especially on the Eastern Front.

Persistent Mud & Ice Issues

No major redesign to fix debris buildup:
- Mud, snow, and ice could still freeze between wheels and tracks
Crews sometimes had to manually clear buildup, even under harsh conditions.

Transport Track System Retained

Tigers still used:
- Wide combat tracks (battle use)
- Narrow transport tracks (~520 mm) for rail travel
Track changing remained a time-consuming and labor-heavy task.

Slight Manufacturing Simplifications

Some mid-production track components were simplified for faster production.
Germany was under increasing industrial pressure, so:
- Designs aimed to save time and materials
- Without drastically altering performance

Operational Effect

Mid-production tracks made the Tiger I:
- More reliable than early models
- Still mechanically demanding
Maintained excellent off-road mobility for a heavy tank, but not without logistical strain.
